Where to find the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
The Osprey is among the fish- eating raptors usually associated with water.
This Uganda bird is as spectacular and aggressive as the African fish eagle.
Osprey birds are passage migrants to a wide range of fresh water lakes, rivers as well as salt-water lakes and are regular visitors during the months of August to April.
While in Uganda you will be able to watch them in Lake Victoria and other migratory areas like Lutembe Bay near Kampala and Mabamba wetland.
Characteristics of the Osprey
The Osprey is a small brown and white raptor with uniquely shaped narrow angles.
It is Dark brown above and pearly white below with a rather small white head, a white crown and a broad black band through the yellow eyes.
Sexes are almost alike though the adult female bird has a fuller chest band.
In flight the Osprey appears mainly white below with striking long angled wings and a distinctive black carpal patches, primary tips and dark edges to the under wing coverts.
In their habitats
Ospreys can be seen in singles often hovering with dangling legs plunging into water for fish.
They are seasonal though others are present in these fresh water lakes all year around.
Osprey birds are generally quiet birds so if present in the region, you will hear no sound.
