THE Indian government will fund a $20m pan African institute to be hosted in Kampala that will serve as a premier skills development centre to empower Africa.
The African version of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was conceived three years ago during the 2008 India-Africa summit in New Delhi.
Then the Indian prime minister directed that the institute be set up in Africa. The decision was left to the African Union states to decide the location of the institute and it was unanimously decided that it be hosted in Kampala.
“We are here to prepare the road map for setting up the institute,” said K.T. Chacko, director of the IIFT part of the team from India.
They were consulting the local on what should be prioritised and what the institute should embed.
“The research agenda, the courses and everything should confirm to the needs of the African people,” said Chacko.
