Patas Monkey

Scientific Name: Erythrocebus patas

Patas Monkey the only species classified in the genus erythrocebus. The Patas monkey is the fastest running primate reaching up to speeds of 55km/hr.

Where to find the Patas Monkey


It is a ground dwelling monkey distributed over west and east Africa, they have a tendency to avoid dense woodland and mainly live in open savanna and semi desert.

How to Identify a Patas Monkey


They grow up to 85cm long from body tail of which the tail measures 75cm alone.

What the Patas Monkeys Eat


Patas monkeys are omnivorous feeding on insects, gum, seeds and tubers.

Behavior


They can be found in groups of 12, each group containing 1 male most of the year but during breeding season there is multi – male influxes into the group. Juvenile males on reaching sexual maturity i.e. (approx. 4 years) usually leave the group to join all male groups.
