Stevia is herbaceous perennial shrub grown for its leaves.
The Stevia leaf extract is a plant-based zero calorie sugar alternative.
The growing worldwide demand for high potency sweeteners, particularly natural sweeteners has of late attracted people’s attention to grow the herb.
The crop is exotic in Uganda and we have a culture site for the herb in Mbarara.
Some varieties on the market include Criollo and Eirete.
Like any other crop, Stevia prefers well drained soil rich in organic matter, and sufficient in mineral content like nitrogen to encourage foliar growth.
Stevia can be started from seeds or by using stem cuttings.
Vegetative propagation with cultured tissues or stem cuttings is most preferred as direct seedling usually results in poor germination.

Stevia is harvested when plants are mature and blooms have just begun to form.
To harvest, use hands to pick the fully matured leaves.
The picked leaves can be dried with low heat and good air circulation for 24 to 48 hours, and then thresh to separate the sweet leaves from the bitter stems.
Harvesting can be done 3-4 times per year.
You can go ahead to extract the sweetener in a similar way of brewing tea, the dried Stevia leaves are soaked in water to obtain a sweet extract, which is then filtered and purified.
